Most “is it cheap?” questions about AI platforms are answered with a per-token table that goes stale in a fortnight. The more durable question is how a platform charges you — where the percentages sit. Here is NanoGPT’s structure.

The structure in four lines
#

  1. You fund a balance. Minimum first deposit is $0.10 in crypto or $1 by card. There are no deposit fees.
  2. Text is billed at list price. Text model usage — in both the API and the web chat — carries no percentage on top of the provider’s list price.
  3. There is an optional subscription at $12/month, as an alternative to pay-as-you-go.
  4. You can stop there. No seat licence, no minimum monthly commitment.

The two places a 5% fee applies

This is the part worth knowing before you architect anything, because both are avoidable:

  • Pinning a specific provider: +5%. If you override routing to demand a named provider for a model, NanoGPT adds 5%. Let it route and you do not pay this.
  • Bring your own key: 5% of normal model cost. If you supply your own provider key, you pay NanoGPT 5% of what that request would have cost on the platform. That is the routing fee for keys it does not bill.

Neither is hidden — both are on the pricing page — but neither shows up in a per-token comparison table, which is exactly why they surprise people.

The default path carries no platform markup. Both surcharges are opt-in: they only attach when you override routing or supply your own key.

What “no markup” does and does not mean

It means the token price you look up is the token price you pay for standard text usage. It does not mean NanoGPT is automatically the cheapest route to any given model: a provider running a promotion, or your own negotiated direct contract, can beat list price. “No markup” is a promise about the middleman’s cut, not a claim to the lowest price in the market.

Is the $12 subscription worth it?

It depends entirely on volume, and you should not guess. The honest method:

  1. Use pay-as-you-go for a fortnight on your real workload.
  2. Look at what you actually spent.
  3. If you are consistently above the subscription price, switch. If not, stay.

Two weeks of real data beats any estimate, including one built from a pricing table.

The 5% invitation discount

What to check before a high-volume commitment

  • The live per-model price for the specific models you use. Model pricing changes far more often than platform structure.
  • Whether your workload needs provider pinning. If it does, budget the extra 5%.
  • Payment method. Crypto and card are both supported, with different minimums.
  • Whether you need vendor-direct terms. If procurement requires a contract with the model provider itself, a router of any kind is the wrong shape.
