What Even Is NanoGPT?#
Honestly? It’s pretty straightforward. NanoGPT gives you API access to a bunch of language models without the crazy markup. That’s basically it. No fancy ecosystem. No enterprise sales team breathing down your neck. Just APIs that work and prices that don’t make you wince.
Their whole thing is keeping costs down. That’s the pitch. And weirdly? They deliver.
Where It Actually Shines#
The price, obviously.
Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat this. Most AI APIs are overpriced for what you get. NanoGPT isn’t. Their rates are often half (sometimes less) what you’d pay elsewhere for similar models.

But Does It Actually Work?#
Yeah. Surprisingly well.
I ran NanoGPT through my usual testing gauntlet. Summarization tasks. Code generation. Chatbot responses. Creative writing. It handled all of it competently. Not perfect, but solid. Comparable to mid-tier offerings from bigger names.
Uptime was good. Didn’t see any outages during my testing. Response times were reasonable, usually under a couple seconds. Nothing that would frustrate users.
The catch? Well, it’s not all roses.
The Honest Downsides#
You’re on the bleeding edge.
NanoGPT adds new models fast. Which is great! Until it’s 3am and something breaks. I hit a couple minor bugs during testing. Nothing catastrophic, but noticeable. Their Discord support is responsive though. Actual humans answering questions, which helps.
Ecosystem is smaller.
Don’t expect the endless integrations and plugins you get with OpenAI. There’s no Zapier connector. No Notion plugin. It’s an API service, not a platform.
Enterprise features? Nope.
If you need SOC 2 compliance reports and dedicated account managers, look elsewhere. NanoGPT is built for builders who want APIs that work at prices that make sense. Nothing more.
My Take#
NanoGPT isn’t fancy. That’s the point.
It gives you access to capable AI models at prices that won’t destroy your budget. The API is clean. The documentation is clear. The support is human. For most projects, that’s plenty.
Would I use it for a Fortune 500 company’s mission-critical system? Probably not. But for my side projects? For startup MVPs? For anything where I need to watch costs carefully? Absolutely.
The value proposition is dead simple: same AI, less money. Hard to argue with that.
